The NL MVP was announce and controversy soon followed (mostly in Philadelphia).
To start, what are the requirements for the MVP:
1. Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense.
2. Number of games played.
3. General character, disposition, loyalty and effort.
4. Former winners are eligible.
5. Members of the committee may vote [...]
Free agents will be able to negotiate with all major league teams this week, so I’m going to look at the available players by position and make some predictions. A lot of these will be off the wall predictions, but some are currently rumors.
Up first, the infielders.
My main beef is the outfield selections. You have guys that are specialized in the field (you wouldn’t want Manny Ramirez anywhere other than left field, while someone like Sizemore would be a waste out of center). Why is it this award doesn’t reward the top left, center, and right fielders. It drives me nuts to see 3 centerfielders win from one league.
As everyone has heard, Jake Peavy is on the market. As as everyone has heard, he wants to stay in the NL (there are conflicting reports that he’d be willing to go to certain AL teams). As the current situation stands in San Diego, I can’t blame them for putting him up for auction. He’s one of the top pitchers in baseball and his value could be at it’s highest.
My biggest gripe about the Rays is the misconception that this team was built through draft picks. While they have had some good picks in the last few years, this team has relied just as much on trades and free agent signings.
Here are the 20 worst free agent signings of the last 15 years. All are listed in chronological order. I’ve also included their stats over the period of the contract, no matter what team they were on.
December 1, 1998 - Albert Belle, 5 yrs $65MM by the Baltimore Orioles
As much as I loved seeing the Cubs be swept, it brings back my biggest problem with the MLB Post-Season - The Wild Card.
I do like having a wild card; it’s made the playoff race more exciting since the WC normally goes down to the last day of the season.
The problem lies in the best [...]

Here are the new and updated Baseball Rankings. Instead of just taking the record, pythagorean record, and farm system, I’ve given each part a weighed score:
- The Record accounts for half of the score. Since the standings are based of record, I thought it deserved more weight than the other parts.
- The Pythagorean [...]
I’ve let the Kyle Lohse extension sit for a few days; I didn’t like it when the rumors were breaking, and I don’t like it now.
The Cardinals just handed over $40MM and a no-trade clause to a pitcher who’s been average (at best) for his career.
This reminds me of a certain pitcher they acquired last [...]
This year, I’m doing things a little different - I’m using Sabremetric stats to pick the award winners. My formula takes Value Above Replacement Player, Win Shares, Revised Zone Rating, and Win Probablity Added. For pitchers, I switched RZR for Pitching Runs Created. For rookies, I only used VORP - it’s easier [...]
